When an employer comes to me to see about their options for employees from out of the country, one option I always screen for is the TN program.
The TN program is a wonderful option for employers of professionals who want to have a temporary employee for up to three years at a time. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) created a path for Mexican or Canadian employees to enter the United States temporarily to perform professional services.
A nonexhaustive list of the professional positions which qualify for the TN program include accountants, engineers, hotel managers, lawyers, urban planners, dentists, registered nurses, animal breeders, dairy scientists, poultry scientists, and seminary and college teachers.
Whether the worker needs a visa depends on where the worker is from. However, the process is easier than most other employment-based options as the Department of Labor is not involved, which speeds up processing immensely.
Besides being a lengthy period of stay, TN workers can also bring their spouse or dependent children under age 21 with them to the United States. This is a wonderful program for both employees and employers who may not be able to find qualified talent in the United States.
